Overview

Sam Brand joined Carmody MacDonald in 2025 as an associate in the firm’s financial restructuring and bankruptcy practice. Prior to joining the firm, he practiced at another St. Louis-based law firm in the field of banking and commercial finance. His work included drafting and negotiating complex commercial contracts and ancillary documentation, diligence review, counseling clients, and multi-party commercial coordination. He has experience on both borrower and lender side transactions across a variety of finance sectors, including secured finance, equipment leasing, barge and railcar finance, mortgage warehouse lending, dealership floorplan finance, student lending, and loan servicing.

In addition to his law firm experience, in 2024, Sam was seconded to the Missouri Higher Education Loan Authority, where he advised on regulatory compliance matters related to a major merger in the student lending space. He also has public sector experience, having interned with the Missouri Supreme Court and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. Sam earned his J.D. from the University of Missouri School of Law, where he graduated with distinction and received CALI Awards for top academic performance in Bankruptcy, Contract Drafting, Property, Legal Research and Writing, and Criminal Law. He also served on the Missouri Law Review and held several leadership and teaching roles during law school. He earned his B.A. in Political Science and Religion, cum laude, from St. Olaf College.
